Castlevania has a storied history dating back to the year of 1986 when the original Castlevania was released for Nintendo Entertainment System. But what put Castlevania on the map is a game known as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for PlayStation. Symphony of the Night was released in 1997 for the original PlayStation to critical acclaim, and was coined alongside Super Metroid as “Metroidvania.” The name “Metroidvania” was coined to describe a genre of games that brought a game to a secluded castle, or cave. In Metroid’s case, it was secluded into a cave, with some locations in labs or space stations. Most 2D Video Games go from “A” to “B” like the original Castlevania games. In Castlevania: Symphony of the Night’s case, the game was secluded into a castle, with some locations going into caves. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night spawned a new franchise underneath the main franchise which is “Castlevania.” That’s what we’re highlighting today…

Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (Playlist)

Many people see Symphony of the Night as the peak of Castlevania, but that peak was broken by the GameBoy Advance games — So much, that Castlevania: Circle of the Moon was a launch title for GameBoy Advance. Konami used the GBA hardware pretty well. My favorite of the games though, is Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow… Oh yeah, that was a good game. It was the game that distracted me during bus rides during my College years.

1/17/2025 Update: If you’d like to see playlists or gameplay of Castlevania on Nintendo DS (and/or 3DS), here they are…
